Should You Hire a Wedding Videographer?

One of the things I hear most from couples is:

“We weren’t even considering a videographer until… [insert reason here].”

That comment always makes me smile—but also gives me a little pause.

After 15 years in the wedding industry, I truly believe that wedding videography deserves a spot in your top 5 vendor list. But the question still remains: Should you hire a wedding videographer, and is it the right choice for you?

Let’s dig in.

Let’s Talk Budget First

Budget is often the deciding factor, especially if hiring a videographer wasn’t initially in your plan. And yes, high-quality wedding videography isn’t cheap—even if you’re considering it last minute.

That said, if you have even a portion of your budget you can dedicate to a wedding film, it’s honestly a no-brainer. Here’s why:

5 Reasons You Should Hire a Wedding Videographer

1. Photos Don’t Talk

Most couples allocate a large portion of their budget to photography—and for good reason. But while photos capture moments, video captures movement, voices, laughter, and emotion.

Twenty years from now, hearing your vows and seeing your loved ones move and speak becomes priceless. I’m not saying don’t hire a photographer—but if possible, budget for both.

2. It’s the Most Common Wedding Regret

I’d estimate that 90% of couples who skip video regret it. People often say, “We’ll never watch it anyway,” but that sentiment usually changes with time. And if you do hire one, make sure it’s a reputable, professional videographer—poor-quality video can be just as disappointing.

3. Your Future Children Will Thank You

If you plan to have kids, they’ll love watching your wedding video—seeing what you looked like, how you laughed, danced, and celebrated.

My parents didn’t have a wedding video, and honestly, it breaks my heart that I’ll never get to experience their day the way they lived it. Photos are wonderful—but they don’t tell the full story.

4. Not Everyone Can Make It to Your Wedding

Unless you have an unlimited guest list (and budget), there will be people who can’t attend. A well-edited video lets them experience the entire day—from the vows to the last dance—with just a click.

5. Timeless Videos Never Go Out of Style

A beautifully crafted wedding film will never age. Sure, the clothes might change, and the editing style may evolve, but a good story? That’s forever.

Think about your favorite movie—it might be decades old, but if it was made well, you still enjoy it today. Your wedding film can be the same kind of timeless treasure.

5 Reasons You Might Not Need a Wedding Videographer

Let’s be honest: there are a few valid reasons not to hire one. Here are the top 5 situations where it might not make sense:

1. You Simply Don’t Have the Budget

Weddings are expensive, and if video is going to push you into debt—skip it. There are more essential things if money is truly tight. You can always plan for an anniversary shoot later on.

2. You’re Planning a Very Small Wedding

If you’re doing something super minimal—like 10 people on a beach—you might not need a full-blown video production. In this case, a simple content creator or a single camera setup might do the trick.

3. You’re Not Willing to Wait for the Final Product

We live in a world of instant gratification, but a well-edited wedding film can take weeks to months to finish. (We usually deliver in 1–2 months, but some videographers take up to 6.)

If you want something sooner, consider booking a Same-Day Edit.

4. You’re a Total DIYer

If you’re the type to buy a tripod from Best Buy, mount your iPhone, and learn to edit in iMovie—you might be happy creating your own version of your day. It’s not ideal for most people, but hey, if it works for you—go for it!

5. You’re Just Not Into Movies

If you’re someone who rarely watches films or videos and you know you’ll never revisit your wedding footage, it’s okay to skip it. (Although I’d still encourage you to think long-term—future-you might feel differently.)
